Several months ago I had some friends in town for a girls' weekend. More than once they threatened to mess up a couple of drawers just to see my face when I reached for a fork in the silverware drawer where all the forks and spoons are carefully snuggled up next to one another.
I don't reserve the task of organizing for the Spring months, but I do admit I am drawn to a once-over as the weather warms up. Some other times of year that are perfect to organize are during a good blizzard (which we had plenty of this winter) and back to school if you have kids at home and need to get ready for the new academic year.
There are two areas of my house that are next on my list: my kitchen (especially my pantry), and my garage. I love straightening the pantry and throwing away those few expired items that have been in hiding. And in the garage, the shovels and other winter gear needs to go! I can't bear the sight of them after this past winter, not to mention the sand and dirt and those remaining fall leaves that keep reappearing.
Not everyone has my passion for organizing and purging so if you don't here is a suggestion or two:
- Start small, then build on your successes
- Tackle one room at a time, or even one drawer or closet
- Put on some music, loud!
- Recruit a family member or friend to help
- Try to get lost in the task, no better way to quiet your mind from the endless thoughts, stresses and worries than organizing
